To The Content Site Navigation Content Direct observation of Berry phase of electron spin -Towards the development of a quantum device with geometrically protected spin information- 2013.09.26 An international research group, consisting of Doctoral candidate Fumiya Nagasawa (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Research Fellow) and Professor Junsaku Nitta of the Tohoku University Graduate School of Engineering along with researchers from the University of Seville (Spain) and the University Regensburg (Germany), has successfully observed the Berry phase of electron spin in a semiconductor device as a change in electrical resistance by utilizing the Aharonov-Casher effect.Unlike time-dependent dynamical phases, the Berry phase acquired by the electron spin wave function in an adiabatic evolution is characterized as being geometrically protected since it only depends on the geometry of traversed paths in parameter space. The Berry phase is a universal phase appearing in a variety of phenomena where numerous studies have been conducted using superconductors and fiber optics. However, there were no examples of direct observation of the Berry phase of the electron spin. The research group of Professor Junsaku Nitta, utilizing the Aharonov-Casher effect which can control the phase of the electron spin through electric fields, was successful in the world's first direct observation of the Berry phase. The results of this research may lead to further development of flying qubits and topological electronics.
